Don't Miss Out! Important Child Benefit Update for Parents of Teens
As the school year progresses, we want to bring your attention to a crucial update regarding Child Benefit, especially if you have children aged between 16 and 19. HMRC is reminding parents to take action now to ensure they continue receiving this valuable support.
Up to £1,354 a year in Child Benefit could be at stake if you don't act before the deadline of 31st August 2025.
Is Your Teenager Staying in Education or Training?
If your child is staying in full-time, non-advanced education (like A-levels or equivalent) or approved training after their 16th birthday, you need to inform HMRC to extend your Child Benefit claim.
How to Extend Your Claim:
HMRC has made it easy to do this online or through their app. You should have received a letter containing a handy QR code that will take you directly to the digital service on GOV.UK or use this link -https://www.gov.uk/child-benefit-16-19
Act Now to Avoid Losing Out!
It's vital to confirm your child's continued education or training by 31st August 2025. If you don't, your Child Benefit payments will automatically stop. You can double-check the eligibility criteria on GOV.UK by searching for "Child Benefit eligibility."
Important Information for Higher-Income Families:
Even if you or your partner have previously opted out of receiving Child Benefit payments due to your income, you still need to extend your claim if your teenager is continuing their education or training.
Furthermore, the threshold for the High Income Child Benefit Charge has recently increased, now falling between £60,000 and £80,000. This means it might now be beneficial for you to opt back into payments or make a claim if you haven't done so before.
Check if You Could Benefit!
HMRC has a useful online Child Benefit tax calculator that can help you estimate how much benefit you could receive and what the potential charge might be. We encourage you to use this tool to see if you could now be eligible or if it's worth opting back in.
