Reminder: Register for Self-Assessment by 5th October 2023
The deadline for registering for Self-Assessment is 5th October 2023 if you have never had to submit a Self-Assessment tax return before. This applies to you if you have started self-employment or become a partner during the 2022/23 tax year, or if you have started to receive other taxable income, such as rental income or investment income.
You may also need to register for Self-Assessment if your income exceeds £100,000 for the tax year. However, this threshold is increasing to £150,000 from the 2023/24 tax year. If you have adjusted net income over £50,000, where you or your partner continue to receive child benefit payments, you will also need to register.
If you do not register by 5th October 2023, you may be fined.
You can register for Self-Assessment online or by post. To register online, you will need to create an HMRC account. To register by post, you can download a form from the HMRC website.
Once you have registered, you will need to submit a Self-Assessment tax return for the 2022/23 tax year by 31 January 2024 if you are submitting online, and 31 October 2023 if you are submitting by post.
If you have any questions about registering for Self-Assessment, you can contact HMRC.
